Laser vision correction is a procedure that eliminates or reduces the need for glasses or contact lenses to see objects clearly.

You are usually able to see more clearly within 24 hours after the procedure.17Jason P. Brinton, MD. Daniel S. Durrie, MD. Enhancing the Speed of Visual Recovery After LASIK. Recent innovations (i.e. SMILE) allow many patients who were previously not candidates for laser vision correction to benefit from this life changing procedure.

Laser eye surgery or laser corneal sculpting is a surgical procedure that uses a laser to reshape the surface of the eye. This is done to improve or correct short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hypermetropia) and astigmatism (uneven curvature of the eye’s surface).

The most popular techniques to correct vision are SMILE (Small Incision Lenticular Extraction) and LASIK (Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis), which use a laser to change the curvature of the cornea (outer window of the eye).

Both allow light entering the eye to focus properly onto the retina so that you can see clearly without glasses and contact lenses.

We use the latest generation of femtosecond laser called VisuMax® 500 by ZEISS, which offers the SMILE technology. A flap-free method that is more gentle and faster than conventional flap-based laser eye surgery.18https://www.zeiss.com/meditec/en/products/refractive-lasers/femtosecond-laser-solutions/zeiss-visumax-800.html

The second, excimer laser is the SCHWIND Amaris, with 7D Z-axis tracking which is linked to the most precise diagnostic and SmartPulse® delivery technology.

With modern femtosecond technology, we don’t need to use a blade and all treatments are performed with laser precision.

We customise each treatment to reduce optical aberrations and provide excellent visual results during both the day and the night.

To ensure accuracy during the procedure (even while your eye moves), the laser systems offer eye tracking and iris and limbal vessel registration. The system matches eye tracking and registration to the eye during surgery to allow for a centered and precise treatment.

Laser vision correction may:19Theodore A. Pasquali MD. Long-term follow-up after laser vision correction in physicians: Quality of life and patient satisfaction

Are there any side effects after laser eye treatment?22Steven D. Chinn DPM. COMPLICATIONS OF LASER SURGERY: SAFETY, RISKS, AND THE PLUME Immediately after the laser eye surgery, you may:

  • Feel a gritty or sandy sensation in your eye
  • Be slightly sensitive to light
  • Experience watering eyes for a few hours

Vision recovers very quickly for most people, especially patients who have had a SMILE23Rupal Shah, MS. History and Results; Indications and Contraindications of SMILE Compared With LASIK or LASIK24Jason P. Brinton, MD. Enhancing the Speed of Visual Recovery After LASIK treatment.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

The most common alternative to laser eye surgery is wearing glasses and contact lenses.

If you are middle-aged and are experiencing near vision loss or have early signs of cataract, we may recommend you consider lens replacement or lifestyle cataract surgery.

During SMILE, which is a keyhole procedure, the laser creates a small piece of tissue (called a lenticule) inside the cornea (the front window of your eye), and the surgeon removes it through a small incision.

That means many of the layers of the cornea are unaffected by the procedure. That allows fast healing. Furthermore, because there is no flap (as with LASIK) there can be no flap-related complications. Patients also experience significantly less post-operative dry eye after SMILE compared to LASIK25Rupal Shah, MS. History and Results; Indications and Contraindications of SMILE Compared With LASIK.

During LASIK, the laser creates a thin flap of corneal tissue on the outer layer of the cornea. The surgeon then folds it back to expose the underlying corneal tissue, which the laser then reshapes to correct the refractive error.

If you have short-sightedness, the laser reshapes the cornea to be flatter. If you are long-sighted, the laser reshapes the cornea to be steeper.

LASIK treats a wider range of refractive error and continues to remain the procedure of choice for many patients.

SmartSurfACE offers the same results as LASIK and SMILE, and is a good option for when patients are not suitable for LASIK and SMILE.

Most SMILE and LASIK patients notice a significant improvement in their vision within 24-48 hours from surgery.26Jason P. Brinton, MD. Enhancing the Speed of Visual Recovery After LASIK

What if I move during the procedure?

The lasers all have tracking devices that can track the eye during surgery. If the movement is too large for tracking, the laser will temporarily stop and can be restarted when safe to do so. Dr Gupta will talk to you through the surgery as she performs it.

How will I keep my eye open?

We use small eyelid openers during the surgery to help keep the eye open. We use topical anaesthetic drops to numb the surface of the eye completely. This ensures that you experience no discomfort during the procedure.

What prescriptions can laser eye surgery treat?

We can use laser eye surgery to treat:

  • Short-sightedness – also known as myopia (from -0.5 units to -10 units)
  • Long-sightedness – also known as hyperopia (from +0.5 units to +4 units)
  • Astigmatism (up to 6 units)

We can also use laser eye surgery to accommodate for the near-vision loss symptoms of presbyopia (ageing eyes).

At what age am I suitable for laser eye surgery?

To be eligible for laser eye surgery, you must:

  • be 21 years old
  • have a stable refraction for several years

Sometimes, we can perform laser eye surgery on people as young as 18. In these cases; however, we are making smaller corrections.

Do any other health conditions preclude me from having laser eye surgery?

Yes, however, we need to discuss these with you to confirm your suitability for laser eye surgery or alternatives.

Am I awake during the surgery?

Yes. We offer patients a pre-operative medication to help relax during the surgery. Being awake is important to allow us to deliver the treatment correctly by tracking the eye and also means a much quicker recovery afterwards.

How long will the treatment last?

For most patients, the treatment will last their lifetimes. Some patients require a “touch-up” which is offered free of charge within 5 years of the treatment.

Other age-related conditions such as presbyopia and cataract development may affect spectacle independence in your later years but there are several other options for vision correction then.

Will I need reading glasses later?

After 50 years of age, most patients who see well in the distance will need reading glasses. Dr Gupta offers lens-based refractive surgery with premium IOLs for patients wanting to reduce their dependence on reading glasses.
