SmartSurfACE suitability criteria

SmartSurfACE (also known as TransPRK) is a touch-free laser eye treatment method and is an advanced form of PRK, LASIK’s predecessor. It’s a great alternative still used today for patients that do not qualify for LASIK or SMILE Pro surgery. SmartSurfACE TransPRK can effectively treat:

  • Short-sightedness
  • Long-sightedness

  • SmartSurfACE combines the benefits of touch-free TransPRK surface treatment with innovative SmartPulse Technology.
  • It works without touching the eye. There is no suction, no blade and no incision.
  • Vision is precisely corrected through the top layers of the cornea with SCHWIND AMARIS technology, gently, touch-free, in a single step.
  • SmartSurfACE corrects refractive errors by superimposing an aspheric ablation profile with a defined epithelial thickness profile.
  • The geometric corneal model, the ablation pulse and the pulse distribution were optimised based on extensive research

Risks of SmartSurfACE are:

  • Slightly slower healing time compared to LASIK or SMILE Pro
  • Corneal haze – a cloudy or opaque appearance of the cornea

  • Step 1: We will numb your eyes with drops, so you do not feel any pain during the procedure. We also provide oral medication to help you feel relaxed and comfortable
  • Step 2: The SCHWIND AMARIS laser removes the epithelium, without suction, flap, or blade
  • Step 3: The laser also reshapes the cornea
  • Step 4: A drug called Mitomycin-c is applied to the cornea to reduce the likelihood of developing corneal haze
  • Step 5: A bandage contact lens is placed in the eye and remains in place for 4-5 days
  • Step 6: We prescribe drops for assist with healing post-operatively
