Experience Premium Cataract Surgery in Adelaide with IVISION Laser

A great solution if you have blurred and cloudy vision and want to have less reliance on your glasses and contact lenses

At IVISION Laser, we understand the frustration and limitations that cataracts can impose on your life. Cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which leads to a decrease in vision. The most important factor in cataract formation is increasing age, however, there are additional contributors, including smoking, diabetes and excessive exposure to sunlight.2https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/cataracts/symptoms-causes/syc-20353790

Blurry vision, sensitivity to light, and difficulty reading are just a few of the challenges cataract patients face. But worry not, our team are here to restore your vision.

Symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Blurred vision
  • Gradual loss of colour sensitivity
  • Sensitivity to light (glare)
  • Poor night vision
  • Difficulty reading

Cataract surgery quickly restores your vision and at the same time decreases your dependence on glasses or contacts. Some patients see very well the day after cataract surgery while others may take a little longer to reach their maximum vision improvement.

Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed in Australia today and it is one of the most safe and successful surgeries available3https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/cataract-surgery/. A number of technological advances over the last decade have not only made the procedure faster, but also shortened the recovery time to 24 – 48 hours. Surgery is usually a day procedure and performed using topical anaesthesia.

Dr. Gupta performs micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS) using the CENTURION®phaco system and the Zeiss Artevo® digital operating microscope with the Callisto® marking system. Only two very small incisions are required to perform the entire procedure. Surgically removing the cataract and replacing it with a clear synthetic lens called an IOL (intraocular lens) restores the patient’s vision.

The remarkable technology of the latest premium IOLs, provides a single platform to correct astigmatism and improve vision at all distances, with minimal side effects. Options for IOL implantation can be discussed with Dr. Gupta during consultation.

Surgery is performed on one eye at a time however, Dr Gupta offers the option of having surgery one day apart so that very little downtime is needed.

Advantages

  • Excellent and predictable vision results5https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7729366/
  • We can tailor the intraocular lens to your individual needs
  • We perform surgery on an outpatient basis so that you can return home the same day
  • The use of intraocular lenses offers a good alternative treatment for presbyopia (ageing eyes)

Disadvantages

  • We usually operate on the eyes on separate days
  • The intraocular lens can develop a posterior capsule opacity that may require laser treatment in future

Cataract surgery is a very safe procedure. However, like all types of surgery, it carries some risk. These risks are less than one in a thousand and most people make a quick recovery and are very happy with their results.

Minor risks include:

  • Dry eye
  • Posterior capsular opacification requiring YAG laser
  • Oedema or swelling of the eye

Major risks include:

  • Infection – 0.1%6https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3092298/
  • Retinal detachment
  • Loss of best corrected visual acuity

Cataract surgery allows for a choice of visual outcomes. IVISION LASER offers the following intraocular lens (IOL) types:

  • Monofocal

You will see in the distance but need to use glasses for middle and near tasks.

  • Blended vision/Monovision

Your dominant eye will see in the distance and non-dominant eye will see well for near. Together this will allow for excellent vision at both distances. Glasses may still be required in some instances such as driving at night and for reading fine print.

  • Multifocal / Trifocal

The trifocal lens design will allow 3 focal points and you will see clearly in the distance, middle and near. There are minor effects like haloes at night but most people adapt over the first 3 months after surgery.

  • Extended Depth Of Focus (EDOF)

These lenses combine multifocal and EDOF technology and elongate your focus. Glasses may still be required for some of the time such as reading fine print however there are fewer side effects 7https://journals.lww.com/apjoo/fulltext/2023/01000/latest_development_in_extended_depth_of_focus.8.aspx. EDOF lenses are often known as a “social” lens which means you can do most of the things you love without the need for glasses.

  • Toric/Astigmatism correcting

Modern IOLs have the ability to correct the smallest level of astigmatism. Dr Gupta uses the Callisto® marking system to ensure correct alignment of the IOL in your eye.

Before surgery

  • Patients will need a referral before seeing Dr Gupta.
  • Dr Gupta conducts full assessments for cataract surgery at IVISION LASER equipped the most sophisticated diagnostic technology such as the Zeiss® IOL Master 700 with central topography with real-time integration with the operating microscope, Cirrus® 6000 HD OCT, Pentacam® HR and Tomey® specular microscopy
    • She carefully assesses the entire eye to check for any other conditions that may affect the outcome of the surgery
    • She will discuss her findings at the consultation with you
  • Technology has advanced to the point to allow us to offer lens implants that can correct your distance vision, intermediate vision and near vision
    • These lenses are called multifocal (MF) and extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses
    • They reduce your dependency on glasses and contact lenses after your surgical procedure
  • An important part of the preoperative consultation with your ophthalmologist is choosing the lens implant

During surgery

  • Dr Gupta performs cataract and lens surgery at Burnside Hospital, Adelaide Day Surgery and, Tennyson Day Surgery equipped with the CENTURION®phaco system and the Zeiss Artevo® digital operating microscope with the Callisto® marking system.
  • Cataract surgery is performed under local anaesthetic with IV sedation to ensure you are most comfortable during the surgery
    • The operation is typically performed on one eye at a time and takes around 10 minutes

After surgery

  • A protective shield is placed over the eye, and you are given a regimen of postoperative drops to aid healing
    • Your vision will likely be blurry for a couple of days after surgery, but it should clear up quickly
  • The surgery is performed as a day surgery procedure where you can return home the same day
  • Increasingly, patients elect to have surgery on the second eye the day after the first eye
    • This reflects the safety and rapid recovery of modern cataract surgery and can have significant advantages
  • The recovery from surgery is about 1-3 days and it’s important not to drive during this time
  • You will be able to return to most normal activities within a week of surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. The lens is normally clear. Cataracts can occur in one or both eyes. Cataracts develop mostly in older people, but younger people can also get cataracts and, in rare cases, babies are born with a cataract (congenital cataract). Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in adults worldwide. In most cases, cataracts can be successfully treated and vision restored. Click here for more information.

Most cataracts develop as part of the ageing process. Long term and unprotected exposure to UV sunlight, smoking, diabetes and a family history are among increased risk factors for developing cataract. Click here for more information.

This paper inspects how the number of Australians with cataracts is growing by two-thirds and will continue to do so within the next 20 years. Click here for more information.
