A procedure that may reduce your need for glasses or contacts

Many people look into vision correction because they want a different way to manage shortsightedness or astigmatism

Vision correction with a flap-free touch

Some people notice eye strain or tired eyes when their glasses or contacts no longer match their vision needs. These symptoms can happen when the eye works harder to focus.

SMILE Pro is one type of laser vision correction. It is designed to change how the eye bends light. By improving the match between the eye and the focus of light, some people may feel more visual comfort in daily tasks. Each person is different, and results can vary.

Wearing glasses or contacts can feel limiting for some people. SMILE is one type of laser vision correction. It is designed with a small opening in the cornea. This approach aims to support a straightforward recovery, though each person’s healing time is different.

Feel ready to step into what comes next

After eye surgery, many people notice a shift in how they feel about their daily routine. It is common to feel more at ease when they are not managing glasses or contacts as often. Some also enjoy exploring small changes in their style when they are not wearing their usual frames.6Kerry D Solomon et al. LASIK world literature review: quality of life and patient satisfaction

Quickly discover everything you need to know about SMILE Pro

SMILE Pro eye surgery may be most suited to:

Patients with pre-existing dry eye

The surgery’s nature makes other refractive techniques risky. They can worsen existing dry eyes or cause new dry eyes.

Dry eye after SMILE Pro is very rare. This is because it uses a minimally invasive laser. The laser better preserves the corneal nerves.10Rupal Shah MS. History and Results; Indications and Contraindications of SMILE Compared With LASIK

The risk of dry eye rises with age. So, SMILE Pro is a great option for older people.

Patients who play contact sports or work in environments with risk of trauma

SMILE Pro is a flap-free laser vision procedure. Because it does not involve creating a corneal flap, some people consider it when they are concerned about activities that may expose their eyes to impact. Your clinician can explain how the procedure works and whether it may suit your lifestyle and vision needs.

Patients who can’t afford a long recovery time

Many people have busy schedules and want to know what downtime may look like. Recovery experiences vary from person to person. Some people describe returning to certain activities, such as work or driving, within a few days, while others may need longer. Vision may continue to settle over several weeks. Your surgeon will guide you on what is appropriate for your individual situation.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

As a first step, take our online suitability test. This will give us an initial understanding of your prescription and lifestyle.

  • If the self-test is positive, we encourage you to book a complimentary laser assessment.
  • At the assessment, we’ll take the time to further discover your needs and goals, perform a thorough assessment, talk about your treatment choices, and make a plan that’s right for you.
  • In some instances, the latest option may not always be the best for you. Dr Gupta will ensure that you are well-informed before making a decision.

SMILE® Pro is a minimally invasive laser eye procedure that reshapes the cornea to improve vision, without creating a flap.

At IVISION LASER, we use the Zeiss VisuMax® 800 femtosecond laser, which uses a focused laser to create a small disc-shaped piece of tissue (called a lenticule) inside the cornea. This lenticule is then gently removed through a small opening, typically 2–4 mm wide11https://www.zeiss.com/meditec/en/products/refractive-lasers/femtosecond-laser-solutions/zeiss-visumax-800.html.

Unlike traditional LASIK, SMILE® Pro does not involve cutting a flap, and the entire laser process takes about 10 seconds per eye. The laser is a “cold” femtosecond laser, which means it works without heat and does not cause burning12Amani A. Ahmed et al. Advantages of Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) for Mass Eye and Ear Special Issue.

Because of this technique:

  • No blade is used
  • Most patients do not see, hear, feel, or smell the laser during treatment
  • The procedure may reduce dry eye symptoms and support quicker recovery for some patients, however this varies from person to person

What are the possible advantages of SMILE Pro laser eye surgery?

Some people consider SMILE® Pro because of the way the procedure is performed. SMILE® Pro uses a femtosecond laser to create and remove a small, lens-shaped piece of tissue through a tiny opening in the cornea. This approach does not require creating a corneal flap.

Possible things people may see as advantages:

  • The procedure is completed using one laser system, which means the treatment is done in a single step
  • The small opening in the cornea may appeal to people who prefer a technique that does not involve creating a flap
  • The outer layers of the cornea remain largely undisturbed, which some people find reassuring when learning about the procedure
  • The design of the technique allows the surgeon to work on specific areas of the cornea
  • Because people have different preferences and vision needs, some may feel this technique fits what they are looking for.
Important to know

Each person’s experience is different. Vision correction procedures carry risks, including infection, inflammation, or changes in vision.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
