Read Dr Aanchal Gupta’s interviews with GLAM Adelaide: SA’s first female-founded laser vision clinic is transforming eye care and paving the way for other women and Here’s how an Adelaide specialist is helping patients ditch reading glasses

Dr Gupta brings over 15 years of experience in refractive surgery, helping patients achieve freedom from glasses and contact lenses. She completed her medical degree at Monash University in Melbourne before undertaking specialist ophthalmology training in Adelaide. She then pursued the highly prestigious Cornea and Refractive Surgery Fellowship at the University of British Columbia,in Vancouver, Canada, training under internationally recognised leaders Dr Simon Holland, Dr David Lin, and Dr Martin McCarthy.

She has since been at the forefront of innovation in refractive and corneal surgery. Dr Gupta was the first surgeon in Australia to perform Allotex® tissue implantation for presbyopia correction. She was also the first in South Australia to perform Descemet Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) and Descemet Stripping Only (DSO) for Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy, as well as the first to offer CAIRS, topography-guided SmartSurfACE, and Keraring implantation for the management of keratoconus.

Dr Gupta serves on the committee of the Australian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (AUSCRS).

Dr Gupta is a College Councillor with RANZCO and a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide. She has previously served as the RANZCO Director of Training for South Australia, an accredited program responsible for training the next generation of ophthalmologists.

Dr Gupta has also been invited to speak at national events such as The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Annual Congress and the Johnson & Johnson Vision Innovation Insights Evening.

Dr Gupta is a Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences, an invited member of the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery (AECOS), and an International Council Member of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS).

From 2026, she joined the editorial board of CRST Global (Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today Global), a respected international publication in the field.
She has been invited to speak at major international meetings, including the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (APACRS).

These appointments represent some of the most respected distinctions in refractive and cataract surgery, awarded to surgeons recognised for excellence and for shaping the future direction of the specialty on a global scale.

Dr Gupta’s keen interest in refractive surgery stems from observing the very positive impact that it has on patients. She recognises that very few fields in medicine and even ophthalmology can promise the precision which refractive surgery can. It translates to high patient satisfaction for whom such results can be life-changing. She is particularly interested in customised technology such as topography-guided laser whereby not only can patients be given freedom from glasses, but in some instances, their vision can be improved beyond what they had known in glasses or contact lenses. Being able to provide state-of-art, patient-centred care is at the core of her practice.
