What is the difference between LASIK and PRK?

When considering laser eye surgery, two of the most common terms you’ll come across are LASIK and PRK. Both procedures offer effective solutions for vision correction, but they differ in technique and recovery.1Saragoussi JJ, et al. Quality of life after LASIK: part II. Quality of life and satisfaction of a population of patients treated with LASIK [in French]. J Fr Ophtalmol. 2011;34:294–302. https://journals.lww.com/apjoo/FullText/2016/11000/ Understanding these differences is key to making an informed decision about which procedure is right for you.

LASIK: The Procedure and Recovery

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is one of the most popular forms of laser eye surgery. In this procedure, a surgeon creates a thin flap in the cornea using either a laser or a microkeratome (a small, precise surgical instrument). This flap is then lifted, allowing another laser to reshape the underlying corneal tissue. Finally, the flap is repositioned without sutures, where it heals naturally.

One of the main advantages of LASIK is the quick recovery time. 2https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.2147/OPTH.S299752 Most patients notice a significant improvement in their vision almost immediately after the surgery, and the healing process is relatively fast.3Durrie, D.S. (2012) Evaluating the speed of visual recovery following thin-flap LASIK with …, Accessed: 12 December 2023 https://journals.healio.com/doi/abs/10.3928/1081597X-20120815-06 Discomfort is typically minimal, and most people can return to their normal activities within a few days.4 Ekktet Chansue et al, Efficacy, predictability and safety of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE),2, Article number 14, Published: 31 August 2015 https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s40662-015-0024-4

PRK: The Procedure and Recovery

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), on the other hand, is a slightly older but equally effective method. Unlike LASIK, PRK does not involve creating a corneal flap. Instead, the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is gently removed, exposing the area for the laser to reshape the corneal tissue. The epithelium naturally regenerates over time.

The recovery period for PRK is generally longer than for LASIK. It can take a few days for the epithelium to heal, during which patients may experience some discomfort and blurred vision. Full visual recovery and stabilization can take a few weeks to a few months.5Sabau. et al. Efficacy, safety, and predictability of transepithelial… : Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, LWW. Despite the longer recovery, PRK is often preferred for patients with thinner corneas or those at higher risk for eye injuries, as there’s no risk of flap-related complications.

Choosing Between LASIK and PRK

The decision between LASIK and PRK depends on several factors, including your eye health, lifestyle, and personal preferences. Both procedures have high success rates,6Saragoussi JJ, et al. Quality of life after LASIK: part II. Quality of life and satisfaction of a population of patients treated with LASIK [in French]. J Fr Ophtalmol. 2011;34:294–302. https://journals.lww.com/apjoo/FullText/2016/11000/ but your specific needs and the recommendation of your eye care professional will guide the best choice for you.

In conclusion, while LASIK and PRK both aim to correct vision effectively, their approaches and recovery experiences differ. Consult with an eye care specialist to understand which procedure aligns best with your vision correction goals and lifestyle.
